Aurelia Conway

Decorative Painting

For more than 30 years, Aurelia Conway painted, beginning with oils and later converting to acrylics. She painted on a variety of surfaces, but for the last ten years of her life, she painted exclusively on gourds.

"I enjoy the smooth surface, " said Aurelia. "And their variety of shapes lend themselves to creativity." She created birdhouses, bowls, Santas, folkart scenes and more.

Aurelia joined the Plaid family of authors in 1997, and authored four books on painting on gourds, including Gourds - Naturally Sensational and Gourdgeous Homes for Birds. Aurelia also helped developed the FolkArt color Van Dyke Brown, which was released in January 2001. "I wanted a warm, but very dark brown color for shading," she said. "Van Dyke Brown is just wonderful!"

Aurelia ran her retail business, Hummingbird Hill, from her farm of the same name in southern Indiana, with the help of her partner and husband, Jim. She was featured in Decorative Painter magazine and Painting Magazine.

In 2004, while attending the Society of Decorative Painters annual convention in Phoenix, Arizona, Aurelia succumbed to a sudden heart attack and passed away. Her art and her memory will live on through the lives of the many people she has touched.
